Following a lengthy campaign, the opening hours at the Tipperary Town Library are being extended.
The arrangement was finalised at a meeting between County Librarian Damian Dullaghan and Cllr Annemarie Ryan on Monday.
As part of the arrangement, the Tipperary Town Library will open five days a week, Monday to Friday.
It will also stay open during lunchtimes, while there will be one additional late evening opening on a day yet to be confirmed.
The changes will take effect from mid-November.
In a statement, Cllr Ryan has said that a new manager and full-time staff member will be in place soon, once the recruitment process has concluded.
Once these staff members are in place, the library will be open for around 40.5 hours per week – up from the current 26 hours.
An assurance has also been given that no more ‘lightning closures’ will occur.
Welcoming the development, Cllr Ryan and the Friends of Tipperary Town Library Group said that while it is disappointing that Saturday opening has not yet been realised, they acknowledge that the extended opening hours are a step in the right direction.
It is not the end of the story, and the campaign will continue.
