The 2018 Tipperary International Peace Award will be presented to former President of Ireland and former UN High Commissioner Mary Robinson.

The announcement was made today by the Honorary Secretary of the Tipperary Peace Convention, Martin Quinn.

Mr Quinn said the decision was made to recognise the efforts of Mrs Robinson ‘in putting human rights standards at the heart of global governance by ensuring that the needs of the poorest and most vulnerable are addressed on the global stage’.

Currently, Mrs Robinson is the chair of The Elders, an organisation brought together by Nelson Mandela in 2007 which involves notable, independent global leaders working in the name of peace and human rights.

Responding to the news of her selection, Mrs Robinson spoke of the Tipperary International Peace Award as ‘a wonderful example of a local community organising a prize for peace, which has achieved international standing and recognition’.

The 2018 Tipperary International Peace Award will be presented to Mrs Robinson at a special ceremony on November 7th in the Tipperary Excel Centre in Tipperary Town.
