The March4Tipp group has raised concerns about Tipperary County Council waiving a total of €283,000-worth of commercial rates in Tipperary town in 2018.

According to the group, figures requested from the local authority indicating that a number of large industrial premises were granted vacancy reliefs, given that for one location, a fee of over €70,000 was waived.

The group has pointed out that if a property is vacant for refurbishment or repair, or is advertised for lease but unable to secure a tenant, then it could be eligible for a waiver.

Responding to the findings, one of the group’s election candidates, Barry Walsh has questioned how the council goes about ensuring that those properties who are granted vacancy reliefs are actually seeking a tenant.

He also pointed out that the aforementioned €70,000 waiver could have covered the revenue collected through parking charges in the town over a year.
