The Principal of St Joseph’s Primary School in Tipperary town has said that she is at her most optimistic about the town’s schools securing “disadvantage status”, after meeting with the new Education Minister.

Representatives of the town’s national schools addressed Minister Joe McHugh at a recent meeting organised by Deputy Michael Lowry.

Speaking to Tipp Mid West today, Louise Tobin said that in her view the new minister is more aware of the challenges facing some schools and the benefits that come with DEIS status.

She is now more hopeful that the town’s primary schools could get DEIS status following the completion of the next review. That review is expected to be rolled out in the early Spring, with any changes coming into effect in September 2019.

Ms Tobin also said that the Minister promised to look at the possibility of providing additional supports in the meantime.

She told Tipp Mid West that she hopes this interim measure could result in additional teaching staff.
