An Post has today confirmed its intention to close 159 Post Offices across the country, with the services that were provided by them now being made available at neighbouring Post Offices.

According to the Irish Postmasters’ Union (IPU), the Post Offices earmarked for closure are where postmasters are opting to retire. Those locations will be closed and the services will be consolidated with neighbouring Post Offices within a 15km radius.

Post Offices in Ballingarry, Clogheen, Coolbawn, Gurtnahoe, Littleton, Newcastle, Templetouhy and Upperchurch are all included on An Posts’ list of closures.

The company notes that while it understands that the process of change ‘will be difficult for some customers and communities’, the end result ‘will be a strengthened, viable Post Office network’.

An Post is also filling vacant contracts in 36 urban and rural locations as well as opening five brand new Post Offices, to be advertised later this week, with more to follow.
The company has also said that as a result of talks with the IPU, all remaining Post Offices will benefit from ‘enhanced services and products, new opening hours and an investment package aimed at improving services for customers’.
