The Minister for Tourism is being called upon to explain why Cahir has been excluded from an initiative aimed at further promoting the South East region’s ancient heritage.

The county Tipperary town has been left out of Ireland’s Ancient East initiative which, according to Bord Failte is geared to maximise awareness of the history and heritage in the region and to bring it to greater international attention.  To do this, it offers visitors a personal experience of 5,000 years of history throughout the region by way of a heritage trail.

However, Co Tipperary TD Mattie McGrath has questioned why Cahir, which is a heritage town, has been left out of this tourist trail.

He goes on to note that the town and surrounding hinterland is rich in early Christian and Norman history and has a significant role to play in highlighting the wealth of heritage that is to be discovered in the South East.

He is calling on the Minister to rectify the matter, or else, he warns, the town will lose out.
