Garda originally from Tipperary injured in the US shooting

A garda who is originally from Co Tipperary and who was injured in a shooting in the US is expected to undergo surgery to remove a bullet lodged in his back.

32 year-old garda Brian Hanrahan from Killenaule, but stationed at Newcastle West Garda Station, was shot twice as an attempt was made to mug him in New Orleans. He was reported to have been shot twice – once in one of his legs and once in his lower back. The shot to his back is believed to have caused internal injuries and he remains in a serious condition in hospital.  However, it is understood that his injuries are not life-threatening. He is believed to have been travelling across the US with his father at the time of the shooting.  He was also recently married and has a one-year old baby girl.
