Man rescued from the Galtee Mountains

A man was rescued from the Galtee Mountains over the weekend after becoming injured as he hiked the mountains as part of a walking group.

The incident happened yesterday afternoon when the man sustained a lower leg injury and was unable to walk.

The South Eastern Mountain Rescue Association was notified, who then sought the assistance of the Coast Guard Helicopter from Waterford.

However, when the helicopter reached the area, it was unable to airlift the man to safety because of the location of the accident.

Instead mountain rescue volunteers went to the accident site in what were described as challenging conditions. They then stretched the man down the mountain to one of their 4×4 and took him to an awaiting ambulance on the Cahir/Mitchelstown Road

This latest incident brings the total number of call-outs SEMRA have made in 2014 to 26, which they say, is a sharp increase on last year.
