It has been decided that a community text alert scheme is to be implemented in Thurles.

Once in place Thurles will be only the second town in the country to implement the scheme - following Carrick on Suir.

The decision was made after a public meeting which was called last week to discuss ways to address issues such as a spate of burglaries in recent times.

Speaking to Tipp Mid West Radio today Cllr Jim Ryan who called the meeting said that burglars are targeting townsl ike Thurles because of their proximity to motorways, which they use as easy access and escape routes.
