Recent recipient of the Tipperary International Peace Award, Malala Yousafzai has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. 

The 17 year old campaigner for the right of girls to have an education was awarded the prize jointly with Indian rights activist Kailas Satyarthi.

Malala, from Pakistan, was shot in the head by Taliban gunmen for campaigning for girls education. 

Kailas Satyarthi meanwhile has headed various forms of peaceful protest in the tradition of Mahatma Ghandi, campaigning against the explotation of children for financial gain.

A record 278 people were nominated for the award. Pope Francis was amont the nominees.
