Posthumous pardon for Tipperary man Harry Gleeson
Written by Nora Samworth
Wednesday, 01 April 2015 18:05
The cabinet has today signed off on granting a posthumous pardon to Tipperary man Harry Gleeson who was wrongly hanged for the 1940 murder of Mary ‘Moll’ McCarthy.
Ms McCarthy was found dead in a field in Marlhill in November of that year.

Mr Gleeson found her body and reported the discovery to gardai in New Inn.  However he was subsequently tried and convicted of her murder.  He was hanged in 1941.
It was later found that key evidence had been held back in the course of Mr Gleeson’s trial.

Cllr Martin Browne says rural isolation can be danger to mental health
Written by Nora Samworth

The state needs to recognise that rural isolation can be a danger to mental health.
That’s according to Sinn Fein councillor Martin Browne as he was commenting on the closure of rural post offices.
Recently, the Department of Social protection has been informing some social welfare recipients that they will no longer receive their payments through the local post office.  Instead they will be paid through electronic transfer in banks.

Commitment given that roads will be in suitable condition for An Post Rás
Written by Nora Samworth
Monday, 23 March 2015 17:17
A commitment has been given that Tipperary town’s Main St will be in a suitable condition for the arrival of the An Post Ras on May 18th.
Responding to a question on the matter at today’s meeting of the Tipperary Cashel Municipal District, Engineer Aidan Finn said that the road needs major work but the National Roads Authority, which has responsibility for it, is unlikely to do this in 2015.
He went on to give a commitment that whatever patching needs to be done ahead of the arrival of the cyclists in May, will take place.
Responding this afternoon, Cllr Denis Leahy said that while it is unfortunate that the NRA is going to wait so long before undertaking the work, he takes comfort in the guarantee by Mr Finn that the road will be in a suitable condition for the Ras.

Concerns on reports of change of method of payment to Social Welfare recipients
Written by Nora Samworth
Friday, 20 March 2015 16:48
A Co Tipperary councillor has said that a change in the way some social welfare recipients will receive their payments represents another attack on rural Ireland.

Sinn Fein’s Martin Browne was referring to reports that the Department of Social Protection is contacting social welfare recipients and telling them that they will no longer be paid in their local post offices, but will be paid through electronic transfer in banks instead.

He maintains that post offices rely heavily on facilitating these payments as they make up 30% of their weekly income in some cases.
He has called for the new arrangement to be stopped.
