Thurles gardaí have issued a warning to businesses about a scam in operation in the county today.

Businesses are being targeted by a number of individuals attempting to sell fake UV scanners that are used to check for forged currency notes.

Then while the trader is distracted, the criminals then attempt to make off with their takings.

Traders should only deal with reputable suppliers, always check ID and never hand over cash if unsure

Anybody who has had such an encounter can contact the gardaí on 0504 25100

Further funding for Tipperary Housing
Written by Nora Samworth

There's good news for Tipperary homeowners on waiting lists for housing adaptations, mobility aids or energy efficiency upgrades.

Funding of over €2.9 million is being allocated by the Environment Department for a series of schemes targeting homes across the county.

Almost another million is being pumped into refurbishing social housing.

This money from Minister Alan Kelly's Department comes on top of the €57 million he already announced earlier this year to tackle Tipperary's housing crisis.

It amounts to over €3.8 million with the bulk going into adaptation schemes for both private and local authority housing.

This includes the construction of extensions for those with a disability or the installation of mobility aids such as stair lifts and ramps.

Over €953,000 of the funding will also be provided to Tipperary County council for the refurbishment of dozens of homes - to bring 61 social housing units into productive use.

A further €465,000 has been earmarked for the retrofitting of local authority homes to make them more energy efficient thus reducing electricity and heating bills.

Over 30 jobs are set to be created through the various schemes and Minister Alan Kelly says the money will significantly improve the quality of life of many Tipperary people.

There was a huge turnout in Tipperary town last night for the Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki Moon.
Mr Ban was in Tipperary to accept the Tipperary International Peace Award which is awarded each year to people for their promotion and pursuit of peace across the globe.
At last night’s award ceremony in Tipperary, Mr Ban began with a brief welcome in the Irish language before praising the country for passing Friday’s referendum on same sex marriage.
In welcoming the result, he spoke of Ireland’s strong commitment to human rights, adding that the matter was a human rights issue.
He also spoke of how the Good Friday Agreement is seen across the world as a successful example of peace making; prompting to refer to the country as a champion of conflict-mediation and intervention.
