A garda investigation is underway in Cahir after the attempted robbery of the post office on Church Street.

According to gardai the incident occured at around 5am this morning.

The burglers used a digger to gain access to the premises.

However, gardai say that they were interrupted in the course of the break-in and fled the scene empty handed.

The digger is believed to have been stolen from the  Iarnród Eireann premises in the town.

The area has been sealed off and the gardaí are waiting the results of an examination of the scene.

Gardaí are investigating and the public is being asked for assistance.
