A county Tipperary TD has said that the government needs to extend the amount of time a person can participate in any of the Social Protection schemes currently in effect.

Jackie Cahill believes that the many community services that benefit from the contribution made by CE, TUS and Rural Social Scheme participants, would benefit further if the timeframe for participation were extended.

He maintains that forcing people who were working on these schemes back on to Jobseekers Allowance is counter-productive and has a negative impact on the people themselves while depriving the communities of workers who he said make ‘a valuable contribution to their communities’.

The mother of a 7 year-old girl with a severe form of epilepsy has said that she is touched by the kindness she has been shown as she travels through Co Tipperary.

Vera Twomey is currently undertaking a walk from Cork to Leinster House as she continues to publicly demand that the HSE allow her daughter Ava access to medicinal cannabis.  Vera says that Ava can suffer as many as 20 seizures a day, many of which can be quite severe and violent.  However, despite exhausting the range of drugs available to deal with it, she says that the legal component of cannabis – CBD - is the only one that has been effective in treating her daughter.  Its effectiveness would be greatly increased, she says, if it were to be combined with another ingredient - THC - which is the psychoactive part of the drug that is illegal.

Despite her daughter’s need, the HSE recently turned down Vera’s application to have the drug made available to her daughter.

Speaking to TMWR this morning Vera issued a plea for public support and for the public to call on their politicians and demand that the matter be addressed urgently.

Gardai in Tipperary town are appealing to the public for assistance in relation to a theft from a vehicle on the grounds of St Michael’s Church yesterday.

Between 1pm and 1.30pm yesterday afternoon, an individual threw a concrete block through the rear window of a car that was parked behind the sacristy of the church.

That individual then stole a number of bags of coin from the vehicle before leaving the scene undetected.

Gardai say that anyone who comes forward with information will be treated confidentially.  They also believe that the thief would quite likely have been very conspicuous as made his getaway on foot trying to carry bags of coin that would have been quite heavy.

Anyone who can assist gardai are asked to contact Tipperary town garda station on 062 80670.
