Mattie McGrath has called on the Justice Minister to say for definite if she intends to extend Operation Thor beyond this year.
Operation Thor is a garda operation aimed at tackling rural crime and theft.
Deputy McGrath made the call after, he said, the minister refused to commit to the continuance of the operation, despite its success in tackling rural burglaries.
He believes that if the minister does not commit to continuing Operation Thor, criminals will start planning more crimes once the current operation ceases.
He noted that in 2015 there were 6495 instances of burglary and related offences in the South East garda division, 1154 of which were in the Tipperary division.

The US Secretary of State John Kerry has been revealed as the recipient of the Tipperary International Peace Award.
Making the announcement this morning, the Honorary Secretary of the Tipperary Peace Convention, Martin Quinn, said that the award is being given to Mr Kerry in recognition of his work on a number fronts.  These include his contribution towards negotiating the agreement that led to the destruction of Syria’s declared chemical weapons and for reaching an agreement with Iran to ensure that its nuclear programme is exclusively peaceful.  He was also the first sitting US Secretary of State to visit Hiroshima, more than 70 years after the city was devastated by the world’s first atomic bombing.
The award will be presented to Secretary Kerry at a date to be announced later this year.
