 The CSO has today published its latest figures, this time focusing on population distribution in Ireland.

According to the figures which are based on the Census of 2016, 37.3% of the population lived in rural areas in April 2016, putting almost two thirds of the population living in urban areas.

44% of the state’s total urban population lived in Dublin while 11% lived in Cork.

On a local level, the census found that in Co Tipperary, which has a total population of 159,553, the population make-up was different to national figures with 41.5% of Tipperary residents living in urban areas and 58.5% living in rural areas.

Clonmel was the most populous town in the county with 17,062 people.  Newport was the county’s fastest growing town, which experienced a 10.5% population growth between 2011 and 2016.

A man was arrested yesterday in connection with the discovery of a cannabis grow house near Bansha last week.

The grow house, which contained over a hundred plants valued at €800 each was discovered on Thursday morning in the Bansha/Glen of Aherlow area.

Gardai say the set-up was quite sophisticated.

Yesterday gardai arrested a man in the Clonmel area in connection with their investigation.  He is being held at Cahir garda station.

Garda in Tipperary town are investigating an alleged assault on a female yesterday afternoon.

According to gardai the incident is alleged to have happened in the Shronell/Lattin area at around 4pm.

Gardai are investigating but no arrests have been made.

It is understood that the victim may have been given a lift from Tipperary town at the time.
